Gerard worked at Costco for 32 years. He began his career in 1984 as a front-end manager in Lauderhill, Florida and was quickly promoted to Regional Operations Manager for many Florida locations and in 1988 was named Vice President of the Southeast Region.
He relocated to corporate headquarters in Seattle, Washington in 1992 as Vice President of Operations and later as VP of Business Delivery. He returned to the Southeast Regional Office in Atlanta in 1999 as Southeast Administrative Manager with operational oversight for Puerto Rico. He retired in April 2016.
Gerard, also known as Jerry, was known for his wit and wisdom and was well respected by his colleagues and employees for his honesty and character.
He was passionate about art, music, cooking, traveling, and anything that took him outdoors. He and his wife Joan were married for 43 years and actually attended the same elementary school in Rego Park, New York. They set an example of how love, devotion, respect, and friendship can build a loving relationship that lasts a lifetime.
Gerard adored and cherished his daughter Alison and he was a loving and supportive older brother who treasured spending time with his many nieces and nephews.
Born Oct. 29, 1952 in New York City, Gerard was the second of five brothers and a sister. He attended City University of New York where he studied liberal arts.
He is predeceased by his father, Robert R. Dempsey (2018); mother, Catherine (2002); and brother, Robert L. Dempsey (1985). He is survived by his wife, Joan, and daughter, Alison; brother James Dempsey (wife Margaret); brother Brian Dempsey (wife Linda); sister, Lorraine Yeomans (husband Adam); and brother Louis Dempsey (wife Lily); as well as many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
