Greg was born on June 23, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, the only child of Sonia and Peter Russack. He grew up in Brooklyn's East New York neighborhood before moving to Franklin Square on Long Island, where he attended North High School. He later attended New York University, commuting into Manhattan each day on the Long Island Rail Road for classes. A New Yorker at heart, he never lost his unmistakable accent or his New York roots.
While serving in the United States Army, Greg was stationed at Fort Eustis, Virginia. During that time, he met his future wife, Maxine, in nearby Virginia Beach. They married and began their life together in Virginia before settling in New York. In 1973, they relocated to the Atlanta area, where they made their home for the rest of their lives.
After settling in Georgia, Greg founded Russack-Owens Company, a commercial real estate appraisal firm that he owned and operated until his retirement.
Greg had a lifelong fascination with World War II history and read extensively on the subject throughout his life. He never passed up the chance to enjoy a cold beer and a good conversation. In his later years, some of his greatest joys came from spending time with his grandsons and cheering them on at their sporting events. He treasured being their grandfather.
Greg is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maxine Russack; his son, John Russack; his daughter, Carrie Ackel and her husband, Jeff; and his grandsons, Harris Ackel and Wesley Ackel.
A private family service will be held.
