Herta was most recently a resident of Insignia Senior Living in Sandy Springs, GA. Herta, affectionately known as “Omi”, was a friend to all who knew her, immediately putting people at ease with her beautiful smile, lively sense of humor, and easygoing conversation. Herta loved to tell stories, and lived a life full of stories to tell. She was especially proud of her 6 children, 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild, all of whom will miss her greatly.
Herta was born in the Ukraine in 1926 to Marta (Fleischauer) and Eduard Schneider. Forced to flee the Ukraine during the Russian Occupation during World War II, Herta eventually settled in Bohndorf, Germany, where, in 1947, she married Adolf Tieslau, and where daughters Brigitte and Erika were born. In 1951, the family immigrated to the United States, working on a dairy farm in Illinois before finally settling in Vineland, New Jersey, where she lived for over 50 years. In addition to assisting her husband with the family farm, Herta worked for over 30 years for Wheaton Glass Company in Millville, New Jersey. Herta was a beloved figure at Wheaton’s, where she was active in the company bowling league.
The consummate hostess, Herta loved to entertain family and friends, and was known for her love of gardening as well as her closely guarded secret recipes, including Klosse, and Strawberry Pierogies, some of her many German and Polish specialties. The Tieslau house was a frequent gathering place, a place of warmth, love, and laughter.
Until her move to Michigan to live with her daughter Brigitte and Brigitte’s husband Steve, Herta was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Vineland, where she was a member of the Circle Lydia. In Michigan, Herta attended St. John’s Lutheran Church in Midland.
Herta was preceded in death by her husband, Adolf, and son, Will and his wife, Betty. Herta is survived by her children and their spouses Brigitte and Steve Glaser of Midland, MI; Erika and Chick Hawn of Hernando, FL; Muppy and Mark Haigler of San Diego, CA:, Rich and Dottie Tieslau of Sandy Springs, GA; and Margie Tieslau and Michael Redfearn of Highland Village, TX.
