James Richard Arnold, 86, of Sugar Hill, GA passed away on July 4, 2021.

He was preceded in death by parents John Richard and Lessye Arnold, and brothers and sisters through marriage: Tom and Dene Adkins, Hurst and Eula Waddell, Eugene and Macel Adkins, Lawrence and Christine Edwards, Pete and Ann Peterman, and Billy Adkins.

Richard, as he was known to his family, was born on March 15, 1935, in Nashville, TN. He graduated from Cohn High School and received a scholarship to attend Vanderbilt University, where he studied Mechanical Engineering. While there, he met a nursing student and the love of his life by the name of Betty Adkins. They married on September 21, 1957, shortly after graduating.

Richard worked in the defense industry his entire career. He accepted a position with North American Aviation in Columbus, OH, which was purchased by Rockwell International. During his career, he travelled to Israel and worked on multiple projects, which benefited the US Military. He worked specifically on a missile project which helped bring a swift end to the Persian Gulf War. Following the division’s move from Columbus to Atlanta, GA, he remained with the company until retiring after 35 years of service.

Papa, as he was known to his grandchildren, delighted in spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Betty Arnold, daughter Maria Melvin, son in law John Melvin, son Rich Arnold, daughter in law Melanie Arnold, granddaughters Olivia Wilson (Patrick) and Julia McCool (Austin), grandsons Matthew Arnold, Josh Melvin, Jake Arnold, and Caleb Melvin, great granddaughter Charlotte Wilson, Sister-in-law Audrey Adkins and many loving nieces and nephews.

Richard was a faithful member of the Church of Christ from his childhood. Most recently, he attended the Buford Church of Christ. Most importantly, he loved the Lord and believed in the power of prayer. In his last days, his Bible was never far from his side.

He was a loving husband and father, and a doting grandfather, who will be greatly missed.
