John Hinton III

Born on April 14, 1947, in Houston, Texas, John was the son of the late Lieutenant Colonel John Hinton II and Thelma Hinton. He grew up in Augusta, Georgia, where he graduated from the Academy of Richmond County.

John earned his degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was a member of the Georgia Tech golf team for two years and an Army ROTC cadet. He later received a Master of Business Administration from Georgia State University and enjoyed a successful career in business as an entrepreneur. John also proudly served in the United States Army Reserve, rising to the rank of Captain.

Above all, John was devoted to his family and to his faith. Jesus Christ was his Lord and Savior, and his Christian faith guided him throughout his life. He shared 58 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Louise Belcher Hinton.

In addition to his wife, John is survived by his son, John Hinton IV and his wife, Michelle, of Alpharetta, Georgia; his son, George Boyce Belcher Hinton and his wife, Elise, of Charlotte, North Carolina; and six cherished grandchildren, who brought him great pride and joy.

John was an avid golfer who shared his love of the game with his sons. He taught them how to play as well as certain colorful “golf terms” that were reserved exclusively for the course and only after particularly poor shots. Growing up in Augusta, he developed a lifelong love for the Masters Tournament. He first attended as a patron with his father in the late 1950s, beginning a tradition that spanned nearly 70 years. Over the decades, one of his greatest joys was sharing that experience with his children and grandchildren.

As a young man, John developed a passion for genealogy. Long before online databases made family research commonplace, he traveled throughout the United States and abroad digging through original records to trace his family’s history. He found fulfillment in preserving the stories of earlier generations and passing them on to his family.

John will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He entered the presence of his Heavenly Father with the full knowledge of his family’s enduring love for him.

Visitation will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at Sandy Springs Chapel, 136 Mount Vernon Highway, Sandy Springs, GA 30328, followed by a funeral service at noon at the same location. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park, 201 Mount Vernon Highway, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
