She was born in the suburban community of Kenilworth, NJ, where she attended public schools. Growing up she had a thirst for knowledge and the sciences, and decided to attend nearby Rutgers University, where she graduated with a degree in Biology.
Following Rutgers, Melanie set off to make her mark in New York City, where she was able to gain employment at a prestigious investment company on Wall Street. She engulfed herself in the rich culture of NYC in the 1970’s and developed a love for classical music, theatre and elevated cooking.
In the late 1970’s, Melanie moved to Boston and joined a leading investment advisory firm as an assistant portfolio manager. There she met her future husband Jose in 1982, the start of a deeply loving and mutually supportive relationship of 43 years. Melanie and Jose settled into the Boston suburb of Brookline, where they bought a home and lived until 2010. In Brookline, Melanie developed her own catering business, and later moved into medical practice consulting, where she had the opportunity to work with the Boston Celtics NBA basketball team. Jose and Melanie were childless, but adoring parents to two adopted and beloved brother tabby cats, Beau and Oscar, who were by their side for 20 years. During their time in Boston, Melanie developed a love for summers on Cape Cod and the Islands, and in particular the beautiful seaside community of Chatham, Massachusetts, where she was always at peace and content.
In 2010, tired of long and icy Boston winters, Melanie and Jose relocated to Atlanta, GA where Jose had landed a CFO position in a software technology company. In 2017 they bought a home in the Sandy Springs suburb north of Atlanta, where Jose later ran a financial management consulting practice until 2024, when he retired.
Melanie is survived by her husband Jose, sister Michelle DeRocco, niece Allison DeRocco and nephew Matthew DeRocco. Melanie was a bright, angelic light of caring, giving and compassion to all those she came in contact with in this world, and she will not be forgotten.
A memorial service will be held at Sandy Springs Chapel and Funeral Home in Sandy Springs, GA on August 2nd, 2025 at 11:00 am. Melanie’s ashes will be laid to rest in the waters off of Chatham, Massachusetts at a future date.
