

Mr. Melvin H. Mooney, Jr., age 87, of Sandy Springs died November 7, 2011. A native of Atlanta, he was a 1949 graduate of Georgia Tech. A Marine veteran, Mr. Mooney was a Staff Sergeant and served in the South Pacific during WWII. Retired after 37 years with Southern Bell, now Bell South, he was a past President of the Dogwood Chapter of the Telephone Pioneers. A volunteer with AARP for Tax Aide to the elderly, he was recognized for 25 years of service. He was a member and Deacon of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. He was predeceased by his parents, Melvin H. Mooney, Sr. and Myrtle White Mooney and his daughter Jennifer Mooney. Survivors include his wife Betty Vickers Mooney, daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Brad Burkhart of Roswell, grandson, Austin Burkhart of Roswell, sister-in-law, Dale Meehan of Loganville, 2 nephews and 1 niece. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Mike Clary and Aaron Menikoff will officiate. Interment will follow in Arlington Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Vernon Baptist church, 850 Mt. Vernon Hwy. NW, Sandy Springs, GA 30327. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and on Wednesday evening from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Sandy Springs Chapel Funeral Directors, 136 Mt. Vernon Hwy.NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
