Monodeep “Morgan” Mitra, 53, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Kristin McGrath Mitra and the proud father of Curran Sebastian (19) and Arjun D’Arcy (16).
The firstborn son of Dipankar and Rama Mitra, Morgan was born on June 15, 1970 in Calcutta, West Bengal, India. His entrepreneur father Dipankar founded United Chrome Tannery which processed and exported leather and leather-finished goods. While the company was based in Calcutta, Dipankar traveled the world to visit his international clientele. Upon his return, he regaled his two sons with tales of far-flung lands, igniting in young Morgan a thirst to explore the world.
Growing up in Calcutta, Morgan loved music, learning both the keyboard and guitar. He played cricket and soccer, and was a cricket bowler throughout his high school years. A voracious reader, Morgan devoured fiction and non-fiction alike, from The Hardy Boys series to tomes like the dictionary and encyclopedias. With a mind like a sponge and a ubiquitous book in hand, Morgan absorbed every bit of information he could glean from its pages.
Throughout his childhood and adolescence, Morgan always dreamed of coming to the United States to live and work. English being his favorite subject, he formed a close bond with his English teacher who was a mentor throughout high school and helped him realize his dream. Upon graduating from The Calcutta Boys’ School in 1988, Morgan moved to Alabama to attend Troy State University where he graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Computer Science. Continuing his studies at Emory University, he earned a Master of Business Administration from the Goizueta School of Business in 1997.
Two months later Morgan met his soulmate, Kristin McGrath, at their new employee orientation for Nortel Networks in Dallas, Texas. They forged an easy friendship which blossomed into a first date on Valentine’s Day in 1998. Early in their courtship, Kristin got a nine-month job offer in Paris and Morgan faithfully visited her monthly for the duration. Exploring Paris via long walks punctuated with languid café stops, the pair talked about their future and what each wanted out of life. They decided that if they had two sons, they’d be named Curran and Arjun. By the end of her assignment in Paris, Kristin and Morgan had seriously discussed marriage and embarked on a voyage to India so she could meet his family. Welcomed with open arms by the elder Mitras, Kristin felt remarkably at home in their country and the amazing trip cemented the young couple’s decision to spend the rest of their lives together. In April of 1999, Morgan surprised Kristin with a trip back to Paris where he proposed on her birthday. They were married five months later on September 11, 1999 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Atlanta.
Morgan’s career began with a decade in sales at Nortel Networks. He moved to Ericsson where he spent six years as National Account Manager for AT&T, then made the leap to Accedian Networks for two and half years as Senior Sales Director responsible for AT&T and Sprint. The last nine years of his career were with Cisco Systems where he transitioned to software sales as an Automation and Orchestration Sales Leader.
As successful as Morgan was in business, it paled in comparison to his brilliance as a father. Kristin and Morgan welcomed their first son Curran Sebastian on April 19, 2004. On November 29, 2007, Arjun D’Arcy’s arrival completed their happy family. Both boys shared a wealth of beautiful and impactful life experiences with their father. He passed along to them his passion for travel, dining, his pursuit of worldliness and knowledge, reading books and enthusiasm for watching sports. Taking after their dad, Curran has already traveled to 21 countries and Arjun has visited 18. Both excellent students, they loved to converse and debate with their ever-adroit father.
A cultural chameleon, Morgan transcended places, societies and friend groups. He had a contagious, unbridled excitement for adventure and relished sailing, sports, fashion and social gatherings. Possessing a gift for engaging strangers in conversation, he always made a point to ask others about their lives, listening with genuine fascination and soliciting their opinions on topics that he sensed would interest them. Morgan was warm, welcoming and an accomplished home cook, exemplifying the consummate host. Quick-witted and charismatic, he drew people in with his generosity of spirit. Morgan was the person everyone wanted at their party, lighting up the most sedate groups with his boundless joy. He sang loudly and confidently (despite rarely knowing the lyrics), and danced without inhibition. His unique brand of energy beckoned others around him to join him in his fun. An infectious cheerfulness and interest in those around him drew new friends to Morgan everywhere he went. A true Bengali man, he was always planning his next meal while eating and his next trip while traveling. A family member observed, “he was always sucking the marrow out of the bone of life.” Finally, Morgan knew what things mattered in life and made everyone he spent time with feel like the most important person in the room. He was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.
Morgan is survived by his wife of nearly 25 years, Kristin McGrath Mitra; sons, Curran and Arjun Mitra; brother, Rajdeep Mitra (Gargi); sister-in-law, Courtney McGrath Garrity; brother-in-law, Steven McGrath (Andrea); nieces, Sreetama Mitra, Fiona Garrity and Sophie McGrath; nephews, Liam Garrity, Quint and Noah McGrath; and his loving mother-in-law and father-in-law, Martha and Patrick McGrath. He was predeceased by his beloved parents, Rama and Dipankar Mitra.
