Nancy Jean Hallenbeck was born on November 11, 1936 - surprising her parents as the younger twin. She started writing at just 18 years old, and it was her passion to share her world with others and to understand theirs. To this end, she became a columnist, newspaper editor, author, and poet.
In 1968, she was widowed with four children under the age of 9, with the youngest only 4 months old, and she moved to Atlanta to be with her twin sister Holly. There she found the inner strength not only to survive, but also to flourish, and to raise these children to be strong, and free to be themselves.
Nancy earned her BA in Psychology from Oglethorpe University. She was a lifelong learner. She focused her writing on interpersonal relationships and the necessity of high self-esteem for children and adults; she believed in connection, synchronicity, and the power of the individual.
She expressed her beliefs not only in writing, but in the way she lived her life. For many years, she was the Mistress of Ceremonies for the Atlanta Pops Orchestra, sharing her love of music. Nancy was a gourmet cook who might surprise someone she just met with a fresh-baked cheesecake. She was generous to all, whether through an unexpected gift or a powerful insight.
What did she love? Most of all she loved her family and friends. She filled her life with books, singing, dancing, and a lifelong fondness for daffodils. She loved to find extravagant opportunities to give to others.
She loved beauty.
And she herself was beautiful - glamorous and sparkling with her blonde hair and radiant smile. In 1999, she was first runner up in the Miss Senior Georgia pageant. Nancy’s real beauty, however, came from within. She was the strongest and most loving person we ever knew.
Nancy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Colonel Earl B. “Scot” Roehm.
She is survived by her treasured twin sister, Holly Boyett Young (Ronn).
She is survived by her son, Glenn Bailey (Laura); her daughters Laurie Ecke (Skip) and Meg Jett (Lowell), and her son Bill Bailey.
She is also survived by grandsons Walter Ecke (Emily) and Daniel Ecke (Luckie); granddaughter Rachel Lawley (Mike); and grandsons Douglas MacKenzie Jr. (Jesse), James Conner, and Scott Conner. She loved her great-grandchildren Henry and Jude; Parker and Rhyse; and Rhodes.
She is also survived by her step-children: LeeAnne Brill (Dave), grandchildren Devon, Damon, and Deanna; and Scot A. Roehm (Melissa) and granddaughter Sarah Roehm (Vance) and several great grandchildren.
Additional beloved family members include Tom and Carol Farley and daughter Kris; Kim Boyd (Steve); Brad Landon (Veronika); Trish LeRoux (Roger), Jay Hallenbeck (deceased), Amanda Hallenbeck and Travis Hallenbeck (Mika), Lori Howard (Bob), and Sue Plummer.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Melda Hallenbeck, and brothers Richard Alan Hallenbeck and William Carl Hallenbeck.
The family will hold a Celebration of Life service to honor Nancy on July 25, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Arlington Chapel (HM Patterson & Son, 173 Allen Rd. NE, Sandy Springs, GA.).
