William Lee Luckey, Jr., age 54, of Sandy Springs, Georgia, passed away on July 14, 2021, following his heart attack and subsequent cardiac arrest on June 27, 2021.
While “Superdad” Will, full of wit, wisdom, compassion and positive energy, will be deeply missed by his family and friends, we know he will be the angel we need in our lives moving forward. Will was born at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, and raised in Sandy Springs, Georgia. He graduated from North Springs High School and then the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. Like his own dad, he was constantly busy, always working away at something, and his career in the golf industry started before he even knew it. A job at Dunwoody Country Club in Dunwoody, Georgia, led to a job at Jennings Mill Country Club in Watkinsville, Georgia, then to his initial post-college employment with Mizuno Golf USA and, ultimately, his home away from home sales and account management role with FootJoy for the past 25 years. And though Will loved the game of golf, he loved serving his customers more, helping them manage their pro shops, tournaments and respective memberships. Will and his family lived in Nashville, Tennessee, Richmond, Virginia, and Charlotte, North Carolina, before returning to Georgia, where he worked with golf clubs in Alabama, Florida and Georgia.
Will said that welcoming his two sons into the world and becoming a dad were the greatest gifts he could ever be given, and everyone who knew him understood this to be true by his words, actions and manner of living. The joy and wonder associated with being dad to his little Luckeys, his family’s provider, and a man of faith, guided him down his own path in life in which he also served as caregiver, counselor, coach, and single parent with co-parenting responsibilities. Will was known for his smile, his strength, and his amazing ability to truly connect with others. He was also a gifted storyteller, an avid gardener, a fun-loving sports fan … the list goes on and on. Will had a deep appreciation for design, reflected in the homes he remodeled or built, and a casually elegant style, able to easily make a baseball cap or pair of cowboy boots look that much better. His focus, determination, perseverance and resilience could not be denied, and so challenge translated to opportunity for him and never-ending change led to his continued personal growth and development. All of us with Team Luckey are so blessed to have known and loved dear sweet Will and we have no doubt his love will sustain us and support us as we struggle with this sudden loss.
Will is survived by his sons Tristan and Landon of Sandy Springs, Georgia, his former wife Dani of Johns Creek, Georgia, his brother and sister-in-law Jeff Luckey and Karina Nimmerfall of Berlin, Germany, his sister and brother-in-law, Beth and Greg McCoy of Vero Beach, Florida, his cousins in North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, New York and California, his other close relatives in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, and his loyal devoted dog Dipper. Will was preceded by his dad, William Lee Luckey, in 2013 and his mom, Gloria Griffin Luckey, in 2002.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 24th, from 6 – 8 PM at Sandy Springs Chapel (136 Mount Vernon Highway NW, Sandy Springs, Georgia, 404-255-8511). Will’s funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 25th, at 3 PM at Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church (471 Mount Vernon Highway NE, Sandy Springs, Georgia, 404-255-2211), with Rev. Barrett Abernethy officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Arlington Memorial Park (201 Mount Vernon Highway NW, Sandy Springs, Georgia, 404-255-0750).
