Charles Grandeson Curtis Jr., age 87, of Ventura, California, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2025, at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, following complications from a broken hip sustained three months earlier.
Born April 30, 1938, in Ventura, Charles was the beloved son of Charles G. Curtis Sr. and Elsie L. Curtis (Davis). A proud Ventura native, “Chuck,” as he was affectionately known, lived a life full of passion, service, and creativity.
On June 1, 1968, Chuck married the love of his life, Elethra S. Leavitt, in the St. George Utah Temple. Their union was one of deep love and commitment, and they shared 25 beautiful years of marriage together.
Chuck honorably served his country as a Military Police officer in the United States Army and later as a Sky Marshal, protecting passengers during an era of growing international air travel. A man of great intellect and discipline, he earned three master’s degrees and was fluent in several languages.
Chuck had a lifelong love for music and the arts. He participated in numerous theatrical productions, operas, and plays throughout the Los Angeles area, delighting audiences with his expressive talent and deep appreciation for beautiful love stories. He was an avid supporter of the arts and found joy in storytelling, both on stage and off.
Chuck also had a playful and adventurous side. He spent countless joyful hours restoring his cherished MG cars, and the skies felt like home when he was flying his Cessna. Whether behind the wheel or at the controls, he was happiest when surrounded by movement, rhythm, and freedom.
Above all, Chuck was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family meant everything to him, and nothing made his face light up more than time spent with his children and grandchildren. He had a special way of making everyone feel deeply loved and truly seen — a gift we will carry with us forever.
He is survived by his children: David S. Curtis, Sarah H. Gentry, Megan L. Clark, Charles C. Curtis, and Crystal R. Curtis; his 17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; and his dear sister, Carole. He was preceded in death by his parents and his little sister, Lynn, whom he loved dearly.
He was our hero, our storyteller, our guiding light — and he will be missed beyond words.
In honor of his passion for the arts, donations may be made to a local arts organization or youth music program.
