Christopher Paul Ehret

July 27, 1941 – March 25, 2025
Obituary of Christopher Paul Ehret
IN THE CARE OF

Funeraria del Angel Santa Paula

Christopher Paul Ehret, age 83, of Thousand Oaks, California, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and cherished member of his community, Chris will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Chris always felt he was fortunate. He was born in San Francisco into two very supportive and loving extended families - and then acquired a third when his WWII widowed mother remarried when he was age 5.

Among his Santa Paula High School awards was a National Merit Scholarship, which back then gave him a full ride in college. Encouraged to make use of his math and science skills, he spent a year at Cal Tech before he surprised everyone by switching to Redlands University. He missed history classes and working with words, he said. And co-ed classes!

His fortune continued after he graduated when he was accepted into the Northwestern graduate history program, with an emphasis on the relatively new field of African history. Northwestern also let him take linguistics courses so that he could base his research on language reconstruction. He would become one of the few African history professors who tackled very early African history, and any history at all through linguistics comparisons.

More good fortune: UCLA, having started up its own African history division, hired Chris just as he accepted his PhD degree. And the next 52 years, including 11 as an emeritus research professor, were history! They were teaching, researching, writing, conferencing, and mentoring that Chris would have happily done for free had he had the means to sustain himself and his family.

At Redlands, he had met his first wife Vanae and together they had two cherished children, Susannah and Seth. After their marriage amicably concluded, Chris reconnected at a high school reunion with classmate Pat, who would be his second wife for the remaining 33 years of his life. Pat added two additional adult children to his family, Allan and Jana.

Cardiac arrest and a stroke on April 26, 2022, changed his and Pat’s life ongoing. Chris came home from rehab with three stents, a reduced long-term memory, and little to no short-term memory but he was very physically fit. Blessed with more good fortune, he and Pat were able to qualify for an apartment at University Village, allowing them to escape from the responsibility of caring for a large home and yard in Camarillo.

Right up until succumbing to prostate cancer, Chris enjoyed reading, working puzzles, watching Jeopardy, exercising, and visiting with his and Pat’s children and their families. He never lost his sense of humor or his appreciation for the care that he received.

Chris will forever be remembered for his love of family, his quiet strength, and his deep devotion to those he held dear. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will be passed on through the generations.
