Donald was born on August 6, 1931, in Aurora, Illinois, to Dewey and Alice Battan. He served in the United States Air Force from 1949 to 1953 and shortly thereafter married the love of his life, Loretta Nilsen, in 1955.
Donald loved books and music and was an avid fan of both the San Francisco 49ers and the Green Bay Packers. He loved the Giants almost as much as he hated the Dodgers! He served as manager of the Department of Motor Vehicles in the San Fernando Valley, where he was adored by his employees. Throughout his life, Donald opened his home to family members, exchange students, and friends, welcoming them for days, weeks, or even a year. He had the kindest, most generous heart.
In 1985, a brain aneurysm forced Donald into retirement. However, his sense of humor and sheer determination carried him through the difficult rehabilitation that followed. Everyone who met Donald appreciated his intellect, his stories, and his quick smile.
Donald is survived by his son, Douglas Battan (Joan), of Bakersfield, California; his daughter, Kathleen Battan (Catherine), of Denver, Colorado; and his son, Michael Battan, of Oxnard, California. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Bryan Battan (Brooke) and Erin Crites (Justin), as well as several great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Loretta Battan.
A graveside service will be held on November 6, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Pierce Brothers Santa Paula Cemetery, 300 Cemetery Road, Santa Paula, California.
