Raymond was born on March 14, 1923 in Alicia, Arkansas. He was the oldest of three boys, born to Reece B. and Eula Barnes McCalister. They moved to Santa Paula when he was an infant. Raymond attended local schools and in 1942, he enlisted in the Naval Reserve (now known as Seabees). He spent 2 ½ years in the European theater of operations. While in England, he met the love of his life, Laura Riden. They were married in 1943 and made Santa Paula their home. They were blessed with three sons Raymond L. Jr., Ian Reece, and Douglas Van McCalister.
Raymond was predeceased by his parents, brothers Gerald and Don, wife Laura, sons Doug and Raymond Jr., and second wife Shirley. He leaves his son Ian (Sue); five grandchildren Julie (Greg), Kimberley, Brian (Laurie), Eric (Jenn), and Mike (Amber); seven great-grandchildren Reece, Kade (Kaydin), Keira, Evan (Sierra), Austin, Hailey, and Chelsea. He also leaves his bonus family, Louis, Cheryl, Carolyn, and Thomas, as well as his beloved sister-in-law Noel, niece Lina, and nephew Kirby.
Raymond’s life was made happy and comfortable by his amazing caregivers Martha, Annette, Sochi, Martina, Michelle, Doris, and Gina. A special thank you for the loving care given to Raymond by Dr. Beagler and his staff, as well as Dr. Hakansson.
Raymond lived a wonderful life. He had an amazing work ethic and was blessed to do the many things he had on his bucket list. At almost 101, he still amazed us with his humor and intelligence.
