Betty Carolyn Johnson Jay was born in Butler, Alabama November 3, 1946. She was raised in the Mt. Sterling community on a farm and loved the freedom of riding her horse all over the pastures and through the woods. Betty graduated high school in 1965 and she loved her friends and would always say her class was so close.
Betty married Wayne Jay on November 14, 1964. She was a homemaker for many years and taught herself how to sew and sewed for many people in the community. She had two daughters, Carolyn and Christine “Chrissie” and a son John, “Jody”. She became the school secretary at Butler Elementary in 1976 and went on to pursue a degree in Elementary Education and later a master’s degree. Betty loved teaching and would always say it was her calling. She loved her students and her students loved her too. Betty also taught Sunday School at First Baptist Church in Butler for many years.
Betty enjoyed playing golf, camping, and hiking with her family. She loved cooking and making everyone feel special. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and member of the Butler community.
Betty moved to Satsuma, Alabama in 2011 to be close to family. After living in Butler for 64 years, she embraced the new adventure with excitement and a desire to meet new friends. She quickly made Satsuma her home and was a member of the Lions Club, Women’s Club, and Library Club. She joined First Baptist Church of Satsuma and to no one’s surprise, she became the teacher of the Faithful Friends Sunday School Class. She also volunteered at Robert E. Lee Elementary School.
Betty loved flowers and making her backyard a wonderful place to have a party… and party she did… there was always a reason to celebrate and have people over to eat, talk, listen to the band, and just enjoy each other’s company.
The neighbors became more like family in just the short time she has been in Satsuma. They all say she is the reason they all became friends because she got everyone together with all her fun parties.
Betty never met a stranger and was loved by so many! She will be so missed by all who knew her…
