

July 3, 1939 - March 20, 2017 Capt. Charlie "Pawpaw" Madden – a 77 year-old native of Hartwell, Georgia and resident of Eight Mile, Alabama passed away at his home on Monday, March 20, 2017. Mr. Madden served in the United States Air Force for six years. Upon his discharge, he worked for a time with the telephone company and Scott Paper Company before going to work on tugboats where he worked for over 40 years, retiring as a captain. Capt. Madden enjoyed gardening and building things, but above all else, loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to help any friend or neighbor in need. A good husband and father, a wonderful grandfather, and exceptional neighbor, Capt. Madden will be missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Jessie Madden, and wife, Barbara Madden. Capt. Madden is survived by his daughters, Terry Wilkerson (Kent) and Tammy Miller (Randy); grandchildren, Katherine Licata (Tim), Kristen Cooney (Nick), Emily Bossard (Lucas), Justin Wilkerson, Drew Miller, and Whitney Ward (Joseph); great-grandchildren, Ethan and Haley Gilley, Norah and Evie Cooney, and Dawson "Doodlebug" Ward; brother, Herbert Madden; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, many friends and neighbors. Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Radney Funeral Home in Saraland on Thursday, March 23, 2017, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the service hour.
