Donald was born on May 29, 1951 in Lucedale, Mississippi to the late Anna Lois and Curtis Broome. He was the couple’s third child. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jay Broome.
He is survived by his sisters Bronlyn Parker of Perkinston, Mississippi and Delores Reed of Lucedale, Mississippi.
Don grew up on Mill Street in Lucedale and graduated from George County High School. His family loved to travel and he enjoyed summers camping all throughout the United States. Don attended Perkinston Community College. He relocated to Satsuma, Alabama, in the late 1970’s and began a career as a chemical operator with Shell Chemical/Dupont in 1978. It is at Shell where he met the love of his life and wife of 43 years, Pamela Gayle Jordan. Shortly after their marriage, their family expanded with the addition of Don’s daughter from his first marriage, Brandie. In 1981, Donald honored his brother and named his son, Jay Jordan Broome. Eighteen months later their family was complete with the birth of their daughter, Melissa Paige Broome.
Don continued to work for Dupont and enjoyed employment sponsored athletics to include softball and basketball. He also enjoyed coaching Satsuma baseball teams for many years and fishing in his spare time. He coached with kindness, encouragement, and enjoyed sharing knowledge. He nurtured a love of math in all three of his children and learned how to fix anything that was broken. What most people will remember him for is his incredible cooking. He loved to cook and his family loved to eat anything he made.
After over 30 years of shiftwork, Don retired from Dupont and relocated in 2016 to Orange Beach, Alabama. Britt Russ, Joshua Farmer, and Shelby Broome were added to his family through marriage to his children. Don has five grandchildren: Easton Russ, Kenley-Anna Russ, Maggie Farmer, Maddox Farmer, and Jackson Farmer. He spent time enjoying all of the grandkids’ activities and traveling with his beloved wife. They spent time between North Carolina and Orange Beach, Alabama.
Family will receive friends from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. on Thursday, August 3, 2023 at Radney Funeral Home in Sarland, Alabama, with a chapel service immediately following at 1 p.m.
