Georgia Dee Wolfe Rather

Georgia Dee Wolfe Rather – went to be with her Lord and Savior on October 12, 2011. Mrs. Rather was a native of Laurel, MS born on November 4, 1925 and lived in Chickasaw for 68 years. Mrs. Rather retired from teaching school in 1991. She was a dedicated teacher and often said she would love to teach forever. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Lucy Wolfe of Magee, MS; infant daughter, Carolyn Leann Rather; sisters, Mary Gilbert of Desoto, MS, Jean Salazar of Nashua, NH; and infant granddaughter, Rachael Morgan Rather of Bay Minette, AL. Mrs. Rather is survived by her husband of 68 years, Leon J. Rather, Jr.; one daughter, Janice (Ronald) Smith of Mobile; two sons, James (Veronica) Rather of Mobile and John (Marcie) Rather of Bay Minette, AL; sister, Sandra Price of Philadelphia, MS; brother, Rev. George M. (Kathy) Wolfe of Brandon, MS. She was blessed with fourteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special caregivers, Pam Walker, Mary Spicer and Ann Odom. Mrs. Rather had a sweet spirit and loved her God. She was a walking testimony as to what a Christian should be. She was a shining example to her husband, children and grandchildren. For many years, she taught Sunday school, and was an active member of Women’s Missionary Union. She was a dedicated member of First Baptist North Mobile, and a prayer warrior to her daughter and many others. She loved to cook and always carried her “chicken and dumplings” to those who were sick or unable to do for themselves. Mrs. Rather was a past Vice President of the Chickasaw Women’s Club and a member of the Chickasaw Garden Club. She and her husband were avid travelers. They belonged to “Bama Cruisers” and had many camping friends that were a second family to them. They were always ready to “go camping.” Funeral services will be Saturday, October 15, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Radney Funeral Home in Saraland. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 5-8 p.m. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
