James Hoyt Hood, Jr. – born in Bessemer, Alabama on November 24, 1936, raised in Chickasaw, and a longtime resident of Semmes was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, December 18, 2017. He loved serving the Lord, enjoyed studying the Bible, and was inspired by his good friend and Sunday school teacher, Joe Mooneyham. His favorite Bible verse was Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”
Mr. Hood was a proud veteran of the Unites States Marine Corps. He retired from International Paper Company after 40 years of service and was preceded in death by many of his paper mill buddies. Mr. Hood was a 32nd degree Mason.
He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Peggy Shires and Nona Wright; beloved brother-in-law, Horace “Piggy” Pullen; and cousin, James E. Morris. Mr. Hood is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Alice Mosley Hood; daughter, Leigh Ann Hood Parker and her fiancé, Bailey Ezell; cherished granddaughter, Lauren Kate Parker; sisters, Joy Pullen and Betty Trippe; a host of nieces and nephews; and his canine buddy, “Max.” The family would like to offer a special thanks to the staff of Comfort Care Home Health/Hospice for all of their support.
Funeral services will be held from Semmes First Baptist Church on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at the church from 9 a.m. until the service hour. Interment will be in Semmes First Baptist Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mike Morris, Steve Morris, Tim Fairley, David Phillips, Bob Lofton, and Derek Digman with Robert Rigsby, N. Bailey Ezell, and Christian Soutullo serving as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial be made to the Wounded Warriors Foundation.
