Mr. Carroll, a longtime resident of Chickasaw, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 13, 2020, Providence Hospital in Mobile, AL. Monroe, as he was known in his early years, was born in the Central Park area of Birmingham on April 12, 1928, but soon moved with his family to Cat Mountain (now Hillview) and then to Fairfield Highlands (now Midfield) close to the steel mill where his father worked. He attended Hueytown High School before joining the Navy where he served on the aircraft carrier USS Block Island, CVE 106, as a fireman first class. Following his active duty, he served in the Naval Reserves for 4 years. Upon his honorable discharge from active duty, he married Elizabeth Ann Reeves, his childhood sweetheart, also from Fairfield Highlands. He and Ann moved to Auburn while he attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute before returning to Fairfield Highlands to start their family, which eventually included three sons. They remained there until her death at a very early age. Later, he married Juanita "Nita" Wilson and relocated to Chickasaw, AL, where they raised their young family which now included Nita's daughter from a previous marriage. It was at this point that he changed his moniker to "Jim". Except for a three year job assignment in Lubbock, Texas, in the 1960's, he lived the rest of his life in Chickasaw. He was a member of the Chickasaw United Methodist Church and the former First United Methodist Church of Prichard where he served faithfully in many capacities. He retired from Hemphill Industries of Alabama, Inc. as president and co-owner. He and Nita were members of the Bama Cruisers RV club and traveled extensively during their retirement years until her death in 2000. Of their many long trips throughout the United States and Canada, their favorites were to Alaska and Nova Scotia. He was blessed to again find love with Jacqueline Fontaine Carroll, and they continued to enjoy the latter years camping, traveling, puttering around in their garden, following Auburn football, and spending time with family. He is survived by Jackie, his children Patrick (Claudia) Carroll of Madison, AL; Robert Carroll of Mandeville, LA; and Donna Wilson Dunbar of Maryville, TN; six granddaughters, Kelly Carroll McDougle and Erin (Cory) Carroll Blevins both of Madison, AL; Emily (Norman) Carroll Hagan of Fairhope, AL; Stephanie (Mazen) Dunbar Siam, of Abu Dhabi; Amanda Dunbar of Maryville, TN; Jessica (William) Carroll Glass of Tibbie, AL; nine great-grand children, Joshua McDougle, Abigail and Emilia Blevins, Lauren, Caroline, and James Glass, Jackson Dunbar, Leila Siam, and Mollie Dolbear. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas Calvin and Clara Mae Adcock Carroll, sisters Virginia Carroll and Doris Carroll Higgins, brother Ardis Carroll, his wives Ann Reeves Carroll and Nita Wilson Carroll, and son David L. Carroll. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service, which will in the sanctuary at Chickasaw United Methodist Church, Chickasaw, AL on Monday, February 17, 2020, at 10:00am. Interment will follow at Mobile Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, or any veteran support group of your choice.
