Jeffrey Robert Wells passed away at the age of 69 on June 2, 2026, peacefully at Springhill Hospital, near his home in Satsuma, Alabama, leaving behind a legacy as warm, loud, and honest as the life he lived.
There was never any guessing where you stood with Jeff Wells. In a world full of polite hesitation, Jeff was a straight shooter—a man of profound authenticity who wasn't afraid to let you know exactly how he felt. If he loved you, you knew it. If he disagreed with you, you knew it. He spent his life striving to do the right thing, and he wasn't afraid to say so. Yet, for all his unapologetic honesty, Jeff was a true people person at heart. He loved nothing more than striking up a conversation with folks, a smile on his face, eagerly sharing the latest joke he had just heard.
For over thirty years, Jeff was a pillar of the grocery industry, navigating the high-stakes world of retail as a store manager and receiving manager. From his early days with Grand Union to his time with Mac’s Market, Mr. G’s, and ultimately Publix, Jeff was the guy who kept the wheels turning. He earned the deep respect of vendors, truck drivers, and stock clerks alike because he never asked anyone to do a job he wouldn’t do himself. He understood that a community is fed from the back door to the front shelves, and he took immense pride in doing that job right until his retirement in January of 2022.
But when the retirement party ended and the keys were turned over, Jeff poured all that fierce dedication straight into his home.
On October 6, 2012, Jeff married his partner and confidante, Penny Hempstead Wells. Together, their fourteen years of marriage became a beautiful, bustling chapter defined by family and devotion. They spent those years proudly raising three of their grandchildren, Ariel, Regina, and Kingston, weaving a tight-knit world filled with love and guidance. Especially as Jeff grew older, having family come to visit became his absolute favorite thing. The house was never better than when it was full.
Jeff’s perfect day didn't require a grand stage; it required a comfortable seat, a screen, and the people he loved most. He was a passionate NASCAR fan, captivated by the roar of the engines. He kept his finger on the pulse of the world by watching the news, but his absolute favorite broadcasts were the games shared with Penny and the kids. To sit on the couch, trading commentary, laughing at his jokes, and experiencing the collective groans and cheers of a family living room—that was Jeff’s version of heaven.
Jeff is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Beverley and Robert Wells, and his cherished daughter, Lindsay Hempstead, who surely met him with open arms.
His memory, his endless supply of jokes, and his unwavering integrity will live on through his wife, Penny Hempstead Wells; his children, Jeremy Wells, Brian Wells (and his wife Jen), and Ben Hempstead (and his wife Holly); his sister, Wendy Bilodeau; and the grandchildren who brought an undeniable sparkle to his life, especially Ariel Treadway, Regina Hempstead, and Kingston Hempstead, whom he raised, as well as Chloe Hempstead, Hunter Hempstead, Jason Wells, and Gavin Wells.
True to Jeff’s spirit, his life will not be marked by somber, immediate mourning, but by a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date, where jokes can be retold and his memory honored properly.
The family of Jeff wishes to extend their sincere thanks for the many prayers, well wishes, and condolences that they have received through this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the donor's choice of charity in Jeff's honor.
Jeff lived life on his own terms, did the right thing, and spoke from the heart. He will be deeply missed, but the laughter he left behind will never be forgotten.
