Joan is preceded in death by her parents, John Franklin and Annie Mae Scott (Laws), and her younger brother, Richard (Ricky) Joachim Scott, the apple of her eye.
A devoted wife of sixty-seven years, she is survived by her husband Donald, four daughters, Donna Anthony (Rob), Libby Hoffman (Joel), Cathy Kelley, and Peggy Buggs (Tobbie), ten grandchildren Amy Coelho, Josh Edwards, Megan Simonelli, Carley Bohannon, Jamie Edwards, Robbie Anthony, Murphy Buggs, Mary McKinney, Caitlin Gorman, and Julia Maddox, fifteen great-grandchildren, her brother, John F. (Scotty) Scott , Jr.(Toni), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A native of Mobile, Joan grew up in the Oakdale district surrounded by a large extended “Scott” family with many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She attended St. Matthews Catholic School until the fifth grade when her family moved to the Loop. She then attended Little Flower Catholic School and graduated from Bishop Toolen High School in 1955.
God blessed her with a beautiful voice, which her parents recognized very early on and used what means they had to secure singing lessons from “Miss Thelma”, a professional voice coach. Through grade school, Joan performed in many vocal recitals and became one of the favorites, often performing solos in many venues around Mobile, always supported by her family. In high school, Joan and her brother, Scotty, met Fr. Tony Zoghby and joined his theater guild. Joan and Scotty performed together in many public productions such as Broadway plays as well as original acts. Her love of music was handed down to her four daughters, teaching them songs from her childhood as well as playing records that she loved. Often the radio in the car would be turned off and Joan and her girls would sing together. She continued to use her musical talents singing in church choirs and for many weddings and funerals.
She met and married Donald Squires in 1958 and were married in Little Flower Catholic Church. They soon started their family and together, began raising their girls. The family moved from Mobile to Saraland in 1963, where they lived until moving to Somerby in 2021.
Although Joan worked several jobs over the years, she always prioritized her family and her faith. She could be found at any number of sports venues from softball fields to volleyball courts for her girls and later baseball, football and soccer fields and more volleyball courts for her grandchildren.
Joan was a devoted member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Chickasaw, attending daily mass. She served in many roles beginning with playground mom / volunteer while her daughters were in school. Over the years her leadership roles included singing in the choir, scheduling mass volunteers, Altar Sodality, school board member, and Parish Council President.
Joan loved spending time with her parents and many relatives on Mobile Bay, her life-long friends, her daughters and their families, and her church family. Even though she was small in stature, she was large in personality and presence, devotion and love. She is home now in the arms of her Savior, with her parents and her brother Ricky, and no doubt scheduling the Angel Choir. We miss you here on this side of heaven but are confident we will see you again on your side of heaven. We love you, Nana.
