John Mitchell, 86, went to be with the Lord on July 16, 2013. Member and Deacon Emeritus of Bayou Sara Baptist Church for more than 25 Years. John, the patriarch of our family was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Operea (Walker) Mitchell; two brothers, R.L. and Herman Mitchell and one sister, Bertha Rae Mitchell. He is survived by his two daughters, Yvonne Mitchell Rabren and Denise Mitchell Thornton; one son-in-law, Randy Thornton all of Saraland, AL: four grandchildren, Donovan W. Thornton, Saraland, AL, Jessica D. Rabren of Mobile,,AL, Tyler M. Rabren of Saraland, AL and Donna W. Thornton of Saraland, AL; three great grandchildren, Brannon A. Thornton, Caleb B. Thornton and Addison N. Thornton all of Saraland, AL; one brother, W.C. (Bill) Mitchell of Mobile, AL and sister, Bertie (Charles) Evans of Saraland, AL. John had a large extended family that truly loved and adored him. A dear friend to John and family, Iva Pierce. Cohorts and confidents, Cecil Byrd and Jerry Hollingsworth. A veteran of the United States Army, served in WWII, stationed in Paris and Germany and served in the Korean Conflict. Retired in 1985 after 28 years with Scott Paper Company. Major John T. Mitchell spent 31 years with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Department Auxiliary, known then and now as CB1. Followed by many years of service with the oldest federal law enforcement agency, the U.S. Federal Marshalls. John was on the first honor flight out of Mobile for World War II. Veterans. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 10:00 AM from the chapel of Radney Funeral Home in Saraland. Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.
