Mary “Ellen” Stewart, born January 17, 1935, in Gadsden, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Washington County Hospital and Nursing Home in Chatom, Alabama on October 23, 2024. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Ray Stewart, her parents, R.A. and Ruby Mashburn, and her sisters, Lee Rubio and Brenda Wilson.
Ellen spent her childhood growing up in Calvert, Alabama, and she then lived in various areas around Washington, Mobile, and Baldwin Counties throughout her adult life. After her retirement, she spent her last twelve years of independent living in Mobile, Alabama in order to be closer to her sisters who she loved so dearly. Ellen was a resident of Washington County Hospital and Nursing home from August 2022 until her passing.
To know Ellen was to know love, kindness, and much laughter. She had the ability to make almost any situation funny and always had a humorous twist to lighten the mood. She had an excellent memory and was an avid story teller. She loved to tell her children and grandchildren about this history of their family and the many, often hilarious encounters, that she faced with her husband, siblings, and loved ones. Most of all, Ellen was a devout follower of Christ and shared his word and example daily. She was always the one to lean on for sound and biblical advice for any life situation. She was a best friend, confidant, role model, and shoulder to lean on for so many who knew her.
Left to cherish her memory are her sisters, Bert Rector and Juanita Howell; her brother, Abe Mashburn; her children, Bobby Ray (July) Stewart Jr., Bruce Stewart, Bennett Stewart, and Jane (Jimmy) Kelly; her grandchildren, Brian (Ashley) Stewart, Roxanne (Damon) Aust, Cory Stewart, Shawn (Lori) Stewart, Mary (Jeremy) Cothran, Leigh Ann (Eric) Turgeau, Laura Kelly, Samantha (Dusty) Faith, Taylor Ann (Jeremy) Williams, Kasey (Carlos) Delagado, and 26 great grandchildren.
