Born November 22, 1944, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, Buddy grew up in the Wheaton, Maryland, area and graduated from Wheaton High School in 1962. Active in the school’s chorus and choir, he listed “private detective” as his ambition in his senior yearbook—an early hint of his adventurous spirit.
Buddy proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1968, attaining the rank of Sergeant and receiving the National Defense Service Medal and Air Force Good Conduct Medal. He also served with the United States Park Police, as did his brother Richard. His varied career included executive leadership with the American Red Cross in Lee County, Florida, from 1979 through 1981, and work as Operations Supervisor at Lee County Airport in 1982.
Funny, outgoing, stubborn, and just ornery enough to keep everyone on their toes, Buddy never met a stranger. He loved a good conversation, bingo, banana splits, and especially a buffet. If shrimp was on the menu, he could give an all-you-can-eat restaurant a run for its money!
Strong and active before his illness, Buddy walked several miles every day with his beloved 80-pound service dog, Sadie. While living with macular degeneration, he attended a blind rehabilitation center in Biloxi, Mississippi, to prepare for changes in his vision. There he met his dear friend Mr. James, affectionately known as his “brother from another mother.”
Following the passing of his longtime companion, Brenda Starr, in July 2025, Buddy made his home with Merinda Mixon and her family in Chickasaw, Alabama. Living with them meant the world to Buddy. They welcomed him as one of their own, offering love, companionship, and a true sense of belonging. Together with his faithful service dog, Sadie, they made his final years especially meaningful.
Buddy is survived by his sons, Brian Fauntleroy and Mark Fauntleroy; nephews, Brent Richard Fauntleroy and Todd Allen Fauntleroy; and extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Travis Emory Fauntleroy Jr. and Margaret Fauntleroy; his brother, Richard Eugene Fauntleroy; and Brenda Starr.
In accordance with his wishes, Buddy will be cremated. A celebration of his life will be held in Alabama, with details to be announced.
