William Harold Evers went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 20, 2024, after recently celebrating his ninety-fifth birthday. A native of Repton, Alabama, Bill grew up working on his family farm before graduating high school and joining the Navy. His military career spanned over thirty-seven years, as he also served in the Army National Guard, Air Force Reserve and Navy Reserve before retiring in 1984.
Bill was known as a master handyman and would eagerly offer his assistance when something needed to be repaired. He seemed to know a little about everything and often shared his knowledge with others. He faithfully attended church services and Bible study classes for as long as he was able. He was also a longtime member of his local Masonic Lodge.
Not to be outdone by his wife’s musical talents, Bill taught himself to play a mean boogie woogie on the piano to impress visitors to his home. No one who knew him well can forget his two-finger keyboard rendition of the theme from Close Encounters of the Third Kind or his “cameo” appearance in that film.
Bill enjoyed working and was not given to excessive relaxation. He could often be found overhauling carburetors, doing yardwork, or meticulously washing his vehicles. In his later years, he spent his time emailing friends on older computers he had rehabbed himself. He was also an online counselor for men who were battling cancer. When he did stop to unwind, Bill usually enjoyed watching suspense television shows and was an avid fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide. He also faithfully attended dozens of piano and band recitals, gymnastic and soccer events, birthday parties and graduations with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-nine years, Carol Evers; by his parents, John and Sarah Evers; his brother Mabry Evers; and two sisters, Francis Higdon and Judy Williamson. He is survived by his children, Kelley Burleson (Gavin), Jeffrey Evers (Terry), Sherry Howard; eight grandchildren, Breanne Adams (Will), Jared Burleson (Alexandria), Benjamin Burleson, Jacob Howard (Tatum), Erica Lyn (Nicholas), Hayley Howard, Andrew Burleson, Fletcher Howard; eight great-grandchildren, Liam Adams, Logan Adams, Isaiah Burleson, Landon Adams, Levi Adams, Aspen Howard, Julianne Burleson, and Madelyn Burleson.
Special thanks go to Mrs. Betty Robinson, faithful caregiver, and to the many doctors, nurses, therapists, nursing assistants and staff at William F. Green State Veterans Home.
Visitation for Bill will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2024 from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Radney Funeral Home in Saraland, with a chapel service immediately following. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
