Alan was born on September 26, 1955, to Zena Inez and Victor Michael Levin in Johannesburg, South Africa. He attended Northlands Boys High School in Durban; served in the South African Defence Force; and in 1971, was a Youth Council Mayor of Durban. He enjoyed playing guitar, surfing, lifeguarding, and nursing.
Alan is preceded in death by his mother in 2016; father in 2023; and wife, Anne Marie Post in 2013. He is survived by siblings, Roni Mira Snitcher, Dana Frances Scher, and Jules Yair Levin.
