He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Brooklyn College in 1973 with a BS in Chemistry and received his medical degree from the University of Padua in Italy. While he was at Brooklyn College he met the love of his life, Ruth, whom he married in 1975. Arthur was an accomplished physician and in his early career was at the forefront of Electrophysiology, being one of the first doctors in the country to implant defibrillators in cardiac patients.
Throughout his 42-year medical career, he accumulated numerous accolades for his work in the fields of Cardiology and Electrophysiology. He practiced Cardiology and Internal Medicine in Sarasota for 25 years and was adored by patients young and old.
Other than his two great loves, his wife and his profession, he had an amazing sense of humor and deep compassion for others without expecting anything in return. He enjoyed baseball (especially the New York Yankees), the beach, bike rides, science fiction, and spending time with his family. Arthur loved working with his hands and enjoyed many home improvement projects where he recruited help from children, grandchildren and friends. His deepest wish was to always be surrounded by his family for meals and holidays.
Arthur is survived by his wife Ruth of 47 years, his children Michelle (Jimmy) Portnow-Rivas, Adam (Janella Leibovitz) Portnow, Leah (Adam Fox) Portnow, MD, and David (Mazal) Portnow; and four beloved grandchildren, Jonah, Eva, Sarah, and Tehilah.
He will be forever missed by family, friends, colleagues, and patients. The gravity of this loss is still not comprehensible. May his memory be a blessing.
A Graveside service will be held on Sunday, May 14, 2023, at 11:00am, Temple Beth Sholom Cemetery, 801 Circus Blvd, Sarasota, Florida, 34232
