Arthur was born on November 15th, 1936 in New York, New York to Arthur and Mary Wasson. Devoted to family his entire life, he grew up in a two bedroom apartment on St. Nicholas Avenue with his parents and three siblings, Patricia Wolfe, Ronald Wasson and Cynthia Penn, where he attended school and services at the Church of the Incarnation.
Arthur married Veronica DelliBovi in 1958, and they welcomed 2 children into their lives, Susan and Art. And in 1970, they purchased their first home in Holbrook on Long Island to raise their family.
Originally a machinist by trade, Arthur was proud to have had the opportunity to work on parts that were incorporated in the first lunar landing module. Upon moving to Long Island, Arthur joined the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department as a corrections officer, where he worked until retiring in 1985.
Upon retiring, Arthur and Veronica moved to Naples, FL, where they began their second life with dear friends and acquaintances they met in their new home.
Family, fishing, and his beloved NY Giants, Mets and Islanders, were his passions. He would speak often of a trip he took to Alaska to fish for salmon, and how he wished that his brother Ron, who had predeceased him, could have joined him.
Arthur was also a supporter of children’s charities, our military and law enforcement. During the Korean War, despite being underage, Arthur tried to enlist on 3 separate occasions, but was disappointed when a heart ailment kept him out of the military.
But first and foremost, Arthur mostly enjoyed being with family. He was blessed with 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; all of whom he saw on a regular basis. Whether it was his or Veronica’s parents and siblings and their children, or his own children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Arthur always wanted to be with family. There were many memorable family gatherings at home and on family cruises in the Caribbean. Arthur cherished every moment, and lived life to the fullest.
Arthur set an example of love, compassion, and patience. He will be remembered as hardworking, caring, and always encouraging and supporting others in whatever they pursued.
Arthur is survived by his wife, Veronica Wasson of Bradenton, FL, his children, Susan Smith (Kenneth Smith) of Bradenton, FL and Art Wasson (Kathleen Wasson) of Pittsboro, NC, his grandchildren, Christopher Meyer (Jennifer Meyer) of Naples, FL, Thomas Meyer of Bradenton, FL , Brian Meyer (Denise Meyer) of Ellenton, FL, Michael Wasson of Pittsboro, NC, Madeline Wasson of Pittsboro, NC, and great grandchildren Colin Meyer, Caden Meyer, Sophia Meyer, and Chloe Meyer. He was loved by his many cousins, nieces and nephews. Arthur is preceded in death by his siblings Patricia Wolfe, Ronald Wasson, and Cynthia Penn.
