Brenda Nyman Berkeley passed from this world unexpectedly on Tuesday the 17th of February leaving us all a lot sadder. She will be remembered for her joyful spirit, generous heart and her vibrant, lively personality.
Brenda was the treasured daughter of Harry and Sonia Nyman (nee Berzon) of Chelsea, MA. She attended Boston State College and Hebrew College and graduated with a BA in Education.
Brenda had faced serious health challenges since quite young in life leaving her with a seizure disorder and hearing and balance issues. But with a fierce courage she never gave in to health problems and as with all things in her life her determination and strong spirit won the day! She still managed to inspire all who knew her with the energy, enthusiasm, intellect and cheerful persistence and tenacity that made her a true “Force of Nature.” Often she was told by doctors that she could be considered “disabled” and “collect disability”. Brenda scoffed at that and would say with an incredulous laugh “Can you imagine they would think I’m disabled".
She happily taught English as a Second Language in the Chelsea School System for 35 years leaving behind hundreds of students who gratefully remember how she enriched their education and their lives. Many were very recent new immigrants to this country and she taught herself to speak a few phrases in a few languages (such as Vietnamese ) so that she could call the parents and let them know if their children were not applying themselves. She was also fluent in Hebrew and Spanish.
She knew how important learning English would be to their success in their new country. Over the years many many students would return to thank her for pushing them the extra mile that led to them being successful in their lives. Even in retirement she was passionate about continuing to educate new immigrants and helped so many to embrace English.
Brenda was married to her devoted husband David Joseph Berkeley for over 48 years. They met when he came to her home to make a phone repair! They married in July of 1977 and have been soulmates ever since.
Anyone who knew Brenda knew how important her Jewish faith was to her. She was a lifelong member of Hadassah and the Sisterhoods of her Synagogues. She was very active in the Jewish life of every community she lived in, studying, attending services and singing and praying at the services with great fervor! She so enjoyed being a member of Temple Emmanuel of Chelsea,MA and Temple Emmanu-el of Sarasota. Keeping Jewish traditions alive and celebrating every holiday fully with her extended family and friends galore was the essence of her happiness.
Upon retiring and moving to Revere, MA and a condo overlooking the ocean she and her husband continued to enjoy the arts. The Metropolitan Opera was a favorite when visiting New York City. She loved attending the theatre as well as concerts and events everywhere they went. They enjoyed traveling the world having spent an important wedding anniversary crossing the Atlantic on the QE2 with family and friends! They spent a few warm winters in Arizona and Florida and made Sarasota their home ten years ago. Here Brenda and Dave developed a whole new set of friends and family to spend these warm happy years with. Brenda loved going out dancing, the Blue Rooster jazz club and all the museums and arts that Sarasota holds. Good times with her we will all miss - her infectious joy at all events. Brenda loved people and parties!!
Brenda was predeceased by her sisters Arline Donovan of Melrose and Lorraine Merrit of Billerica.
Brenda is survived by her sister Sandra Maddeford (nee Nyman)of Chelsea. Her husband David of Sarasota. She will also be sorely missed by her extended family and friends as well as her many nieces and nephews who will always remember the loving attention of their “Auntie Brenda” whom they totally cherished and adored.
