Caryl M. Magnus

Caryl was born in 1931 in Chicago, Illinois to Dr. Joseph Calvin and Pauline Harris Calvin. She was confirmed from KAM Temple in Hyde Park, IL in 1943. Caryl graduated from the University of Chicago Preparatory High School in 1946 and then went on to graduate from Hyde Park High School in 1948. After high school, she worked for the U.S. 5th Army Headquarters in Chicago. She married Maurice Rubin in 1952, and they had three children; Renee, Jon, and Ronald.

Throughout her life, Caryl showed great determination and tenacity. After Maurice died in 1975, she went back to school at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL and earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing. She worked as a nurse for a dermatologist and at Highland Park High School. Even after marrying again in 1981 and moving to Sarasota, FL, she continued her nursing career, working at The Pines of Sarasota and giving vaccinations in the community.

She and her husband attended Temple Emanu-El in Sarasota. Caryl also volunteered in the Sarasota Public Schools helping to teach young children to read.

After her second husband, Robert Magnus, died in 2007, Caryl pursued her love for traveling. In her 70s and 80s, she went to Europe, Australia, and China. She continued to garden and take care of her beloved dachshunds. In addition, she supported and attended theater, symphony, opera, and other arts in the Sarasota area well into her 90s.

Caryl is survived by her brother Robert Calvin of Chicago, IL and her children, Renee, Jon, and Ronald. She is also survived by six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three nieces, and many grand nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husbands Maurice Rubin (1975) and Robert Magnus (2007).
