Darlene Kaye Knepp (Gibson), 65, of Sarasota, Florida, formerly of Montgomery, Indiana, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2025, surrounded by loved ones after a short but fierce fight with cancer.
Born on November 10, 1959, in Washington, Indiana, Darlene lived a life defined by quiet strength, fierce loyalty, and a deep love for those closest to her. She is survived by her devoted husband of 49 years, Stephen Knepp, whose unwavering partnership was the cornerstone of a beautiful life together.
She was the cherished sister of Lois Callahan (Michael Callahan), Dee Shrives, and Tina Thornton, all of Indiana. Darlene was a proud and loving mother to Erik Knepp (Lauren Knepp) of Sarasota, Julie Knepp of Sarasota, and Cameron Knepp (Tanya Knepp) currently of Iowa City, Iowa. Her legacy continues through her seven adored grandchildren: Ariana, Kalen, Kyra, Natalya, and Elliana Knepp, and Sarah and Elizabeth Ortner; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Darlene was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Frederick and Mary Gibson, and her infant grandson, Mason Knepp, whose memory remains forever cherished by the family.
Darlene worked in customer service at her local Walmart, where her warmth and dedication touched countless lives. She loved her friends and family deeply, and while she could be hard to get to know, once you were in, you were in for life. She had a sharp wit, a generous heart, and a signature “mom look” that could cut through nonsense in an instant. That look said everything without saying a word.
She found joy in cooking, crafting, and shopping, especially when it meant finding something special for someone she loved. Her home was a place of comfort, laughter, and the kind of love that stays with you.
Visitation and Services will be held at Robert Toale & Sons in Sarasota on Friday, August 29th, 2025 with Family Visitation at 12:00pm, Public Visitation at 1:00pm, and a Service at 2:00pm.
A separate memorial service will be planned at a later date for friends and family in Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to your local animal shelter, honoring Darlene’s lifelong compassion for animals and her belief in giving back to the community.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
