

Doris was born on February 12, 1939 in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia and escaped to England as a babe in arms several months later. After the war, her family returned to Czechoslovakia only to escape the Communists in 1949 and settled in Buffalo, New York. She graduated from Bennett High School and Buffalo State College magna cum laude in 1961. She married Ronald J. Benice on July 16, 1960. During their 63 years of marriage they lived in: Buffalo; Rockville, Maryland; The Hague, Netherlands; and Mt. Kisco, New York before retiring to Sarasota in 1995.
Doris worked as an elementary school teacher in Buffalo and pursued a career as a personnel management specialist for the National Library of Medicine, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, DC Government, Westchester County NY, and the Veterans Administration hospitals in Montrose, NY and The Bronx.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing bridge and mah jongg. She travelled through Europe, Asia, South America, Africa and all 50 states. She was an officer in the Temple Sinai Sisterhood and co-chaired the Temple’s Congregational Passover Seder for many years. She was also a member of Hadassah, ORT, and NCJW.
Doris was the daughter of Otto and Lily Popper. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sister Vera Goldstein (Robert) of Cherry Hill, NJ, nephew Steven Goldstein (Sandy) of Hopedale, Mass. niece Susan Bergquist (Jon) of Wake Forest, NC and brother-in-law Daniel Benice (Sylvia) of Cary, NC.
