Ed was born in New Albany, Indiana, and grew up in LaSalle Illinois. The biggest love in his life was his wife Cindy (his Bunny) and spending time with his family. He starting writing poetry in 1968 while in Vietnam. He continued to write song lyrics and poetry collaborating with lifelong friends through his website www.poetryyes.com. He was a published author, chronicling his life experiences and life’s observations. His most recent book “Sand Pebbles” is a compilation of his poems and song lyrics.
He was active in sports, both playing and later coaching quadriplegic rugby, receiving the Rugby Endeavor Award for 20 + years of service to the sport. He was an all-around diehard sports fan, never missing fantasy football and agonizing with the Bears season after season.
He was a resolute advocate for disability rights and independent living. Lobbying for change, he pushed the need for curb cuts in downtown Sarasota and was a founding member of the Suncoast Center for Independent Living. His book “Don’t Push Me” teaches us resilience and humor in the face of challenge, dispelling stereotypes by sharing his candid story of living a happy, fulfilled life on wheels.
He loved life and connecting with people, filling a room with his larger than life, center stage personality. Love was his lens for life. He could not wait to get outside to wheel around the block to chat with neighbors. He was the mayor of the neighborhood. His sharp wit and sense of humor was beloved by his family, friends, neighbors, and everyone who was fortunate to have known and loved him.
Later in 2027, we will gather to celebrate his life and love.
