Elena de la Vega Guevara was born in Sampaloc, Manila, on the northern part of the Philippines in August 18, 1925. Born from hard-working parents, “Ellen” or “Len”, as she prefers to be called, was the prettiest amongst her female siblings. That being said, she participated in beauty contests. That is how she met the love of her life Julio B. Guevara. Ellen is a very loving, loyal, and dutiful wife to her husband. She is beautiful both inside and out.
Ellen’s loving and very caring heart was further shown when she and Julio took care of 7 grandchildren, for many years, so their 2 children can go abroad to search for a better living for the family. The 7 grandchildren they raised are now grown and have lives of their own. They are now successful in their endeavors. Ellen has also graciously and lovingly taken care of her great grandchildren. She has always been there for her family. Ellen chose her family over her career. She is an incredibly special person.
She loves spending time with her family. She loves cooking, gardening, singing, and dancing. She is a great cook! She made sure that our family eats together at almost every meal, most especially at supper time. Once asked of what her childhood ambition is, she replied “To be a nurse”. Although she never became one, her career ambition came into fruition on some of her grandchildren. Once asked what her favorite song is, she replied “’Autumn Leaves’ by Frank Sinatra”.
Ellen’s Christian beliefs and devotion to God has guided her through life’s journey. She has helped ingrained in her family the importance of prayers and having a personal relationship with God. Ellen is selfless, serving and loving on others unconditionally, to friends and foes equally.
Ellen, our peacemaker, left us in peace, unity, and tranquility, with a meek smile and a glow on her face, on June 10, 2020. She was surrounded by her loving family. Her life will always be remembered and celebrated. Her legacy of life will go on for generations to come.
“Nanay”, “Lola”… you will truly be missed. We love you very much.
