Ellen was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Herbert Lenk. She leaves behind her son, Ron Lenk; her daughter, Anita Bardwell; her son-in-law, Joseph Bardwell; and three grandchildren, Max Lenk, Leon Lenk, and Martha Lenk.
In August 1938, Ellen emigrated to the United States with her parents and sister, Ingrid, marking what she referred to as the beginning of her “second life” in Cincinnati. This new chapter was eventually filled with raising a family, traveling the world, nurturing a passion for art, and devoting herself to volunteerism.
Ellen graduated from Withrow High School and earned degrees in Art and Education from the University of Cincinnati in 1947. Throughout her life, she was deeply committed to serving her community. She held leadership roles at Temple Sholom in Cincinnati, including Treasurer and later President. After Herb’s retirement in 1985, the couple relocated to Sarasota, where Ellen continued her community service, serving as President of Temple Emanu-El during the 1990s.
Ellen’s creativity and generosity shone through her love of knitting and sewing. She crafted and donated children’s clothing to the Red Cross and created hundreds of teddy bears for children at local hospitals.
She had a fondness for fine dark chocolate and enjoyed a piece almost every day.
May her legacy of kindness, creativity, and service continue to inspire all who knew her.
A graveside service for Ellen will be held Thursday, January 16, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Palms Memorial Park, 170 Honore Avenue, Sarasota, FL 34232.
