Frederick W. Herpel Sr., 95, of Sarasota, FL, formerly of Mineola, NY, passed away on July 31, 2013. Fred was born in New York City. He was employed by First National City Bank, and later was VP in Sales Management for Allied Control in NYC. He retired from Abilities in Albertson, NY. After moving to Sarasota with his wife Dolores in 1986, he joined Holy Cross Lutheran Church, then Faith Lutheran Church, attending and singing in the church choirs faithfully every Sunday. He was an avid golfer, and loved playing International Rummy with friends.
He was a 1st Lt. in the U.S. Army during WWII serving in Belgium and Germany, earning a Purple Heart at the Battle of Remagen Bridge.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Dolores, also his sister, Pauline Reed. He is survived by his three sons: Fred Jr. of Brookfield CT, Douglas (Debby) of Sarasota and Wayne (Marg) of Yardville, NJ. He leaves 5 grandchildren: Kristen of Gaylordsville, CT, Thomas (Abby) of St. Louis, MO, Christopher of Brookfield, CT, Roland “Randy” Yates of Sarasota and Amanda (Kyle) Keitel of Myakka City. He leaves two great-grandchildren: Jubilee Yates and Kamdyn Keitel.
A service in celebration of Fred’s life will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, September 14, at Faith Lutheran Church in Sarasota. The family thanks the loving nurses and attendants at Manor Care of Sarasota and Tidewell Hospice.
