

Gilda Jean DeSpirito, aged 92, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2024, in Sarasota, Florida. Born on November 24, 1931 in Wadsworth, Ohio, to Merle Hayes Polk and Grace Levon Polk (DeVoe). Gilda was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Jeri Lyn Hosfeld, ex-husband Dale C. Hosfeld, and husband Emil T. DeSpirito. She is survived by sons, Rex B. Hosfeld (Sherry), and Gregg D. Hosfeld, grandchildren Catherine Buchmueller (Brad), Melissa Smith (Chris), Laura Watson (Daren), six great grandchildren, and brother Gary Polk (Esther). She also claimed Emil's children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren as her own. Gilda was brought up in the Nazarene Church and remained steadfast in her Christian faith throughout her life.
In 1957, after growing tired of cold winters and snow, Gilda & family moved to Sarasota. Before long she found herself involved with numerous activities, taking roles both large and small in organizations such as the First Congregational Church Auxiliary, City of Sarasota Firemen’s Auxiliary, Sara DeSoto Pageant/King Neptune Frolic and the Sarasota Tarpon Tournament, meeting and making friends along the way.
In the mid 60’s, she found her passion, working with children. Starting at Booker Jr. High School, Gilda dedicated 29 years of her life to the Sarasota County School System, holding various roles including Principal's Secretary at both Sarasota High School & Booker Middle School and other positions.
After retiring, Gilda contributed time as a volunteer at Tuttle Elementary, aiding children whose first language was not English. Gilda & Emil shared a passion for travel, and they enjoyed many trips, traveling to almost all 50 States, Gilda always meticulously documenting their adventures.
A graveside service will be held at Robert Toale and Sons Funeral Home at Palms Memorial Park, 170 Honore Ave., Sarasota, FL, on November 18th, 2024, at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gilda's memory may be made to Tidewell Hospice.
