

Joan was born on August 8, 1943, in Leamington, Ontario, Canada, to the late Frank and Hazel (Jackson) Getty. She grew up in Wheatley, Ontario, and throughout her life also called Burlington, Mississauga, and Bedford, Nova Scotia home—as well as Nassau, Bahamas, before settling in Sarasota.
A 1962 graduate of District High School in Leamington, Joan played the flute in the school band, a love of music she later shared with her son, David Jr. She had a kind heart, a lively sense of humor, and a warm, outgoing nature that made her beloved by all who knew her. She had a special affection for cats- especially her beloved cat Pasha, who was a part of her the family for 18 years. Joan had a lifelong love of music, especially Gordon Lightfoot, Don Williams, and classic Motown—and she was an avid fan of Bette Davis films.
Joan loved to travel, and among her most treasured experiences were trips taken with her husband, David, to Asia for their 25th anniversary, a cruise along the Volga River, and ten unforgettable safaris in Botswana.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, David Charles Gale of Sarasota, Florida. Joan and David met in Wheatley in 1961 and were married the following year, recently celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary in November. She also leaves behind her son, David Douglas Gale of Toronto, Ontario; her cherished cats, Bimini and Kenya; her sister, Gayle Hyatt of Wheatley, Ontario; her brothers, Bill Getty of Toronto, Ontario, and Chris Getty of Innisfil, Ontario.
Those wishing to honor Joan’s memory may consider a donation to the Lymphoma Foundation of America, Florida Cancer Center, Canadian Cancer Society, or The Salvation Army.
