Judson Morton Werbelow passed away on December 6, 2023 peacefully at his home with his family in Roswell, Georgia. Judson “Jud” is survived by loving wife of 65 years, Louise Werbelow, and children Jane Napier (John), Sally Kadrich (Andy), James Werbelow (Violet), as well as his sister-in-law Brenda Werbelow. Jud is also survived and adored by his 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Jud was born in 1930 in Alma, Michigan to Jerry and Helen Werbelow and had two younger siblings, Don and Suzanne. He spent many summers working at his father’s business Werbelow’s Hide, Wool, and Fur, delivering newspapers, and he enjoyed golf in his spare time. After graduating Alma High School, Jud was adventurous and boarded a train to the University of Arizona, where he studied Economics and also played on the golf team before graduating in 1952. He then came “home” for law school and graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1954. Jud met and fell in love with Louise Bamberger, and they were married in 1958. Jud practiced law in Lansing, Michigan from 1955 to 1996 and was a partner at Dickinson Wright law firm for over 30 years. While in Lansing he was Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, President of the Ingham County Bar Association, Chairman of the Ingham County Social Services Board, and President of the Jewish Welfare Federation. Additionally, he served on the boards of Water & Light, the Urban League Board, as well as the Red Cross. Not surprisingly he was also the recipient of the Volunteer of the Year award in Lansing, Michigan. He was truly an incredible and impactful leader in the community and was generous with both his time and money. His accomplishments and positive impacts in the community were plentiful.
In 2010, Jud and Louise moved to Sarasota, and not surprisingly Jud continued his volunteer work at the local hospital, temple, and more. When Jud was not volunteering he loved vacationing with his family and friends, in addition to playing golf and fishing. Jud, along with Louise, taught their children and grandchildren the true meaning of family and community. As a father and grandfather through his actions he encouraged his family always to treat others with kindness and respect. His volunteer work, mostly anonymous, truly impacted so many lives and is a true inspiration! He was a loving and supportive husband, father, and grandfather and will be sorely missed by all!
The memorial service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 10, 2023 at Temple Emanu-El (151 McIntosh Road, Sarasota, FL 34232).
