Julius (Jules) Lerner, 94, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 1, 2017, at The Pines of Sarasota. Born in New York, NY to Max and Sonia Lerner, he lived most of his life in New York and Florida.
Since becoming a grandfather in 1978, he’s been known to many as “Poppy.”
Jules is survived by his sons Brad Lerner of Sarasota, FL and Evan Lerner of Bridgewater, NJ, daughters-in-law Melissa Lerner and Marla Lerner, sisters Roz Cowle and Iris Lane Struber, grandchildren Emily Lerner Stroud (Robert), Michelle Lerner Stern (Jordan), Scott Lerner (Taylor), Samantha Lerner, and Ariel Lerner, and great-grandchildren Hayden Stroud, Reese Stoud, Harrison Stern, Noa Stern and Crosby Lerner, as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Jules was a loving father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, Mimi and his brother Raymond.
Jules had a long and successful career as an executive with Revlon, retiring as its Executive Vice President. When he retired he had worked for the company longer than any other employee – over 43 years!
Before joining Revlon, Jules received a business degree from New York University, where he was president of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity. Jules was also a veteran and served as a B-24 pilot during World War II, reaching the rank of Second Lieutenant before being honorably discharged.
Jules loved sports. He was an avid fan of baseball and football in particular. He was also a skilled golfer. Few things excited him more than a spirited game of gin rummy and he spent many hours surrounded by friends playing cards. Later in life he found the utmost pleasure in spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoying his retirement with his wife Mimi.
A special thank you to everyone at The Pines of Sarasota for their loving care and support and to his dear friend Lynn Savage, whose company and companionship were instrumental in keeping Jules engaged and content.
Private funeral services for Jules will be held at Sarasota National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Pines of Sarasota Rehabilitation & Senior Care Community, 1501 N. Orange Avenue, Sarasota, FL 32432.
