Leonard A Belli was born on May 26, 1937, to Alfred L Belli and Italia R. Amici in New Bedford, Massachusetts. At the age of one, his family moved to Mansfield, MA, where he grew up and later graduated from Mansfield High School in 1955. He continued his education at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology in 1959.
Driven by a passion for helping others, Leonard went on to study dentistry at Temple University. It was there, during his junior year, that he met the love of his life, Elizabeth “Betty” Ludwig. He graduated with his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree as part of the Class of 1963.
Following dental school, Leonard proudly served his country as a Captain in the United States Air Force for two years, with assignments in Greenland and Orlando, Florida. In 1964, he married Betty, and together they began building a life rooted in family, service, and dedication. They settled in the Boston area, where Leonard opened his first dental practice and welcomed three children.
In 1971, the family moved to Sarasota, Florida, where Leonard established a private dental practice that he maintained until 2005. His commitment to education and mentorship continued as he served as a clinical professor in the Dental Hygiene Department at State College of Florida for eight years. Through his work, he touched countless lives—patients, students, colleagues, and friends.
Leonard truly lived the American dream. He built a life defined by hard work, integrity, and love for his family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty. He leaves behind three children—Kimberly Belli, Sandra Belli-Schenck (Kevin), and Leonard Belli (Karen)—as well as four cherished grandchildren: Alan, Sarah, Zachary, and Nicolas.
A Mass will be held in his honor at Incarnation Church on April 17th at 9:30 a.m.
