Marilyn Jean Barton (Hazard), 81, of Sarasota, FL started her next adventure on September 2, 2024, in Sarasota, Florida. She looked forward to being reunited with her friends and family that had gone before her.
Marilyn is preceded in death by her mother Marilyn Williams and father Louis Hazard, her sister Kathleen Hazard, and Husband Maurice (Buzz) Barton. She is survived by her son Christopher Barton (Sheri) of Bradenton, FL; stepdaughter, Lorelei Camp (Neal) of Willison, VT and stepson, Mark Barton (Cheryl) of Topsham, ME. She is also survived by grandsons, Erik, Drew, and Scott Camp, Travis and Ryan Barton, and granddaughters, Mikaela and Morgan Barton.
Marilyn was born in East Meadow, NY to Marilyn Williams and Louis Hazard. She graduated Sarasota High School in 1961 and the Mandl School for Medical Assistants in New York in 1965. She started her long government career with the US District Attorney’s Office in 1972, going on to the US Treasury Department, working in various locations and positions until retiring as a tax technician in 1996.
Marilyn married her husband Maurice in 1969 and had her only child Christopher in 1975. During their marriage they enjoyed camping, fishing, taking their motorcycles for long rides in the summer, and their snowmobiles for long rides in the winter. The family stayed in the New England area until 1980 then moved back to Florida after Buzz retired. She became actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America and the Tuttle Elementary School PTO. She was a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow and a Chapter Advisor. She was awarded the Scouter’s Key, Life Oak Award, District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver. She completed Wood Badge Training and served on a Woodbadge Training Staff.
She was a Life Member of the National Rifle Association and a certified rifle coach. She was also a certified Master Gardener. She kept honeybees both in Maine and Florida, selling honey with her husband at the Medieval Fair each year. She received numerous awards during her employment with the Internal Revenue Service, often recognized for her progressive leadership and professionalism. Always one to stay involved she served as her HOA president until her passing.
After retirement, Marilyn and Buzz traveled the lower 48 states in their motorhomes for many years visiting family and making new friends. They would often travel for over 3 months at a time, heading out from their home to Sturgis, Key West, and any other destination to see what adventures awaited them. Having started out tent camping they slowly upgraded to their pride and joy diesel pusher Bounder motorhome. They continued their travels for just over ten years, enjoying meeting up with friends they had made over the years.
More recently Marilyn’s greatest joy was spending her weekends watching her granddaughters play their various sports and watching them show their animals at the County Fair. There was never a time that she couldn’t be heard bragging to friends and neighbors about her family. She took great pride in everything the different members of her family had accomplished. Though not a scuba diver, she was active in the local diving community, taking a great liking to learning about lionfish and spending time volunteering at the local spearfishing tournament in Sarasota.
A visitation for Marilyn will be held Tuesday December 17, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM with a memorial service to follow at Robert Toale and Sons Funeral Home at Palms Memorial Park, 170 Honore Ave, Sarasota, FL 34232.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to Resurrection House, 507 Kumquat Ct., Sarasota, FL 34236.
