Marta (Nani) O. Umana, age 95 of Lakewood Ranch, passed away at Sarasota Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Her family was at her bedside. She is survived by her two daughters, Evelyn Levin (Barry) of Sarasota, FL and Patty Janssen (Greg) of Lakewood Ranch, FL, her four grandchildren, Charles Heflin (Tina) of Atlanta, GA, Carlos Jose Caceres (Jennifer) of Houston, TX, Kristen Heflin-Corn (Matt) of Atlanta, GA and Derek Janssen of Scottsdale, AZ, 7 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Private memorial services will be held by the family in Sarasota at St. Thomas More Church and in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Nani, as she was affectionately known, was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala where she dedicated most of her life as a teacher and elementary school principal to the education and welfare of underprivileged children. After 30 years, she retired and then started and ran a very successful catering business in Guatemala City for several years. She then moved to the U.S. to be near her daughters and their families and spent the remainder of her time traveling the world including living 5 years in India and 3 years in Singapore.
