Maureen Elizabeth Young, of Bradenton Florida, passed away Saturday April 10, 2021 with her family by her side, at the age of 74. Maureen was born August 6, 1946 in Rockford, Illinois and was the third daughter of four. She married Fred Duytschaver in 1967 and had two children, Angela and Kevin. They later divorced and she married Charles Roger Young in 1983 and gained a stepson Bryan and had another son Michael.
A born-again Christian, Maureen loves Jesus! No matter what storm was going on in her life, Jesus is her rock and her salvation. And it was from her walk with God that she found her purpose in life, serving others. Maureen’s professional career included time as a rape crisis counselor, an adoption counselor, a social worker and family counselor before passing on all that she learned and experienced to others as an educator at The Pastoral Christian Counseling Center that she and her late husband, Roger, founded. She always made time for others.
Always a strong desire to read and learn, Maureen earned her Bachelors Degree in Social Work and her Masters Degree in Maternal Public Health, both from The University of South Florida, and her PH.D in Clinical Christian Counseling and Psychology from Cornerstone University.
Maureen was not just about work, she had a huge ‘fun side’ about her and she loved ‘to party’! It didn’t matter what the occasion, she loved to have people around, socialize, and eat good food – even if it meant hosting a Super Bowl Party and not knowing who was playing or the score of the game – she just wanted to have fun! An admitted “Foodie’, she loved her sweets and her salty foods and was never afraid of a spicy sauce so long as you kept it out of the grout. Haagan Dazs frozen yogurt with chocolate sauce, kettle cooked potato chips, and ‘hot wings’ were some of her favorites.
Never one to sit around, Maureen loved to travel. Some of her favorite trips were to Paris with Roger, Mike, and her sister Carol and her husband John; to Israel with Pastor Mary and her church friends; to Disney World with her family; and her coveted ‘Girl’s Trips’ to Wisconsin, Michigan and Colorado with her daughter Angie, sisters Carol and Jeannie, and her niece Maureen. She was always up for an adventure!
At home, Maureen spent time reading her bible and memorizing scripture to apply to her daily life and loving on her babies Shady, Sugar, Tucker, and TJ who were spoiled by grandma with walks and special treats. When not at home she enjoyed ‘exercising’ at the mall – she would shop till she dropped and she had a great fashion sense for clothes, shoes, jewelry and other accessories. It didn’t matter if it was her own personal style or decorating a home, she just knew how to bring it all together.
Maureen was spunky and always ‘the life of the party’ and she will be missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her loving children Angela [Paul] Carey, Kevin Duytschaver, Bryan [Amber] Young and grandsons Morgan and Conor, and Michael Young. Also surviving are sisters Carolyn and Jean. She is preceded in death by her parents Cyril and Marjorie Tiehen and her sister Mary Kathleen.
Visitation will be held on April 17, 2021 from 2pm to 3pm at the Robert Toale and Son’s Funeral Home at Palms Memorial Park, 170 Honore Avenue in Sarasota. Funeral service to follow at 3pm and the family has invited guests to remain for a light fare of food and drinks to celebrate Maureen’s life.
