Thursday, February 3 at the Tidewell Hospice in Sarasota.
Eddie was born in Wolfstein, Germany and was the youngest of one brother and two sisters.
When Eddie was three years old, his family moved from Germany to the United States where
they settled in Brooklyn, New York. There he grew up, quick to learn English and make friends.
He spoke fondly of his childhood and had memories of keeping pigeons, playing the bugle,
and shooting pool with his friends. Eddie had a beautiful singing voice and was at one time a
member of a barbershop quartet.
In 1943, when Eddie was 19 years old, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. His
service to our country took him to the South Pacific where he participated in campaigns on
Saipan, Tinian, Okinawa, and went into Nagasaki 25 days after the second atomic bomb was
dropped.
Upon returning to the United States, Eddie met the love of his life, Rose. After a short
courtship, the two were married. They had one son, Barry. Eddie began a long career working
for Fairbanks Morse Scales and the Resnick Scale Company. He continued working for them
until he retired at age 65.
In 2008, Rose and Eddie left snow and cold weather behind and joined their son by moving to
close-by University Park, Florida. The couple was well-traveled and loved getting together with
friends. When Rose could no longer get out easily, Eddie was there at her side to be sure she
was safe and well cared for. The space she left in his heart when she died in October at age
100 could never be filled and he missed her immensely.
Eddie will be remembered for his easy smile, his loyalty and constant friendship to others, his
singing voice, and his fierce love for his wife and son, Barry. He is survived by his son, Barry
K. Bauer (Susan) of Bradenton, his grandsons ,Peter Bauer (Beth) Garner, NC, and Scott Bauer
(Jennifer) Boynton Beach, FL, his great-grandson, Matthew Bauer of Garner, NC, and his
grand-dog, Max.
Reinhard Edward Bauer will receive full military honors at a service of remembrance on
Tuesday, February 15, at 12:30 at the National Cemetery in Sarasota, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation be made to The Tidewell Hospice, where both
Eddie and Rose received such loving care. https://tidewellfoundation.org/donate/
