A dear friend to all and the best husband, father and grandfather of all time, Dick Angelotti, was taken to heaven, by the loving arms of Christ on March 3rd, 2022 at the age of 77. He was surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer.
Anyone that met Dick, knew that his family was his everything. Although it was a great loss when he left this earth, he left a part of himself behind within the hearts of those closest to him : his lovely wife of 55 years, Carol; his loving daughters Kim McLeod and Nikki LaBelle; his adoring grandchildren - Logan and Kai McLeod and Regan, Noah, Xander and Bode LaBelle; and his son-in-laws Matt McLeod and Jeff LaBelle.
Born in Erie, PA on December 12, 1944 to the late Ann Diplacido Angelotti and the late Henry Angelotti, Dick was the second of three children. He was the loving brother to Robert Angelotti and to the late Marilyn Angelotti. Growing up, Dick enjoyed the benefits of his Italian heritage by being surrounded by his loving grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. They would’ve been so proud to have known that in 1992 he would receive the Italian of the Year Award.
Dick graduated from Cathedral Prep in 1962, where he developed his love of sports and affinity for reading. He became quite the scholar which opened up many doors to his academic future. Dick attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1966 where he served on Student Council as secretary of his class, was a Football Monogram Winner and Alumni Class President. This is also where he met and married the love of his life, Carol Flaherty. Together they moved to Chicago where he received his Juris Doctor from Loyola University’s School of Law in 1969, paying for his own education by working as a law clerk.
After graduating from Law school in 1969, Dick started his career as an Attorney in Chicago, with the Continental Bank legal department and then began working for Brown, Fox & Bloomberg where he became the firm’s youngest member in their 80 year history. This lead him to open his own law firm in the Chicago area.
In 1982, Dick moved to Sarasota to bring more sunshine to his family’s lives! He began working for Northern Trust Bank as Senior Vice President and business Development Director. He left to become president of the Bank of Boston for the State of Florida. In later years, Dick transitioned from private banking into Wealth Management Services which he continued for the remainder of his days.
Dick was extremely involved in philanthropy and gave much of his time bettering the community. He served on the board of Mote Marine for over 15 years (2 years as Chairman), The Sarasota YMCA for 12 years, (2 as President), was a founding member and the Director of Sarasota Ballet board for 21 years (2 as President), was a trustee on the board for the Asolo Theatre for 8 years and on the Advisory Board of the Juliard School in New York for 3 years. He also served on the board of directors for the Notre Dame Club of Sarasota/Manatee: United Way of Sarasota County, Make-a-Wish Foundation Sarasota Advisory Board and Operation Serving Children. Recently, Dick was very involved with Pines of Sarasota where he served as Chairman of the Foundation Board. Over the last 40 years Dick has raised tens of millions of dollars to better serve the community of which he loved so much, which is one of the reasons Dick Angelotti was twice named Sarasota’s Man of the Year and given the Key to the City!
Dick’s favorite things to do always evolved around his family and friends. Lovingly known as Pops, he never missed an event in which any of his 6 grandchildren participated and he spent every weekend cheering for them at their games, becoming Pops to everyone in attendance, including some refs! After the games, he would rush home to cheer for his Alma Matter, Notre Dame, in any sport they were playing. He loved to play golf at Mission Valley Country Club and was a man of great Faith often attending daily mass. We have been told that Dick took the “fast track” to heaven, for this, we can all agree!
Dick Angelotti will be greatly missed by all those who knew him. He truly was larger than life, a giant teddy bear with a twinkle in his eye, a contagious smile and a heart of gold. Dick made everyone feel like they were his best friend. He lived a wonderful life, filled with love, charity and Faith. We ask that others continue his legacy, by spreading love and kindness and living a good life to the fullest.
A Funeral Service for Dick will be held at St. Martha Catholic Church, 200 N. Orange Ave., Sarasota, on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at 11:30 AM.
