Richard E. Owens, 82, of Sun City Center, FL passed into spirit on December 14, 2010. Born on December 15, 1927 in Ilion, NY, Richard was the son of the late William and Dorothy Parry Owens. After graduating from Ilion High School in 1946, he attended college at Mohawk Valley Community College until he entered the United States Navy in 1948. He served in Navy Aviation from 1948-1952, of which the last two years were during the Korean War. United in marriage with Margaret Louise Younglove on November 23, 1957, they recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. Richard worked for General Electric Aerospace in Utica, NY, for 35 years, retiring in 1987. He enjoyed Upstate NY, living in New Hartford, NY for 36 years and spending time at the family camp on Kayuta Lake in Remsen, NY, before moving to Sun City Center, FL in 1993. For recreation, bowling, golfing, and playing cards brought him much pleasure and he was a member of the Sun City Center Lawn Bowling Club for many years.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Louise Owens, Sun City Center, FL; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Deborah Owens, Westmoreland, NY; one daughter, Cynthia Owens, Hermitage, TN; one brother, William Owens, Ilion, NY; and three grandchildren Bryan, Trevor and Danielle Owens.
In keeping with Richard’s wishes, there will be no memorial service. He had a great love for animals and enjoyed visiting the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, FL, supporting them yearly. Those wishing may donate to the Center for Great Apes in Richard’s memory, www.centerforgreatapes.org.
