He grew up in South Windsor, Connecticut, where he attended South Windsor High School, graduating with the Class of 2002. He went on to study nursing at the University of Connecticut, graduating in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.

Matt leaves behind his parents, R. A. Burns & Joann Burns (née Tramontana), who love him more than words can express. Matt is also survived by his brother Frank and his wife Melissa, his sister Dina and her husband Brent, his nieces Mary and Lucy, his nephews Joseph, Alexei, and Calvin, his Aunts Carol and Jean, his Uncle John, many cousins, and countless friends he made throughout the years all over the world, but particularly in Connecticut, California, and Florida.
