Robert Matthew Burns, universally called Matt by friends and family, went home to God on the 8th of October 2021. He passed away peacefully in his sleep while visiting his parents in Palmetto, Florida.

Matt was born at Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut on the 6th of April 1984. He grew up in South Windsor, Connecticut, where he attended South Windsor High School, graduating with the Class of 2002. He went on to study nursing at the University of Connecticut, graduating in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.

Matt’s caring and compassionate nature made him an excellent and talented nurse. He had an accomplished nursing career, and he worked at several prominent hospitals in Hartford, New York, San Diego, Bradenton, and most recently at the prestigious California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco.

Matt leaves behind his parents, R. A. Burns & Joann Burns (née Tramontana), who love him more than words can express. Matt is also survived by his brother Frank and his wife Melissa, his sister Dina and her husband Brent, his nieces Mary and Lucy, his nephews Joseph, Alexei, and Calvin, his Aunts Carol and Jean, his Uncle John, many cousins, and countless friends he made throughout the years all over the world, but particularly in Connecticut, California, and Florida. Last but not least, Matt also leaves behind his devoted friend and trusty companion Daeda, a miniature schnauzer who now lives with Matt’s mother Joann.

Matt will best be remembered for his enormous, caring heart and his ardent love for his family and friends, whose love for him will endure until the end of time, when the Lord will make all things new.

A Mass of Christian burial for Matt will be held Tuesday, October 19, 2021 from 10:30 AM to 11:30AM at Christ The King Catholic Church, 1900 Meadowood St, Sarasota, FL 34231. Words can’t really express how much Matt meant to me. From when we first met in 2008 in San Francisco through the present day when he made his way back, I can’t help but recall all of the wonderful times we had together over the years in all of the places in the world in between. I truly lived some of the best moments of my life with him, and I’ll never forget all the ways in which he made my life better. This is how I’d like to remember us, young, having the best time, and full of hope for the future. Love, Sean

Our deepest heartfelt sympathy goes out to all who had the privilege of knowing Matt and his family. We remember the Burn's as our neighbors and friends who shared holidays together. I remember Matt, Dina and Frank as children and watching them grow into outstanding adults.

Neighbors from South Windsor, CT send their condolences and love to Bob, Joann and all the other family members.

Matt was really loved by many and will be missed by them. His care, compassion and respect for people, and skill at putting those into action for his friends, colleagues and patients alike touched and inspired a wide circle. He easily connected with his patients, and they loved him! They knew they were getting the best care in his hands as his clinical skills were top, and his ability to empathize with them unique. His colleagues adored him...his sense of humor, lanky energy, willingness to share his knowledge and lead, and to be first to jump in to help, to stand up for the right thing, and dedication to duty as well as his beautiful smile and eyes will live on in the many hearts he touched and inspired. Miss him. Xo kristen

Matt. I am going to miss u so much. You are one of the best nurses I have ever worked with. If I needed to be in the hospital you would be my first choice to take care of me your kindness humor and back rubs are second to none. Signing off to u at end of shift was a treat. We would laugh and carry on with all the quirky things that happened here on 10 east in San Francisco. Your smile and bright eyes was always a joy to see. RIP sweetheart I love u

My condolences to everyone. When I first met Matt, he was this skinny skater looking dude with long floppy hair who just moved to SF and I didn't expect much of him. I turned out to be one Matt's first friends in the city and he quickly made many more with his charming and gregarious personality. He was the constant life of the party but yet persistent about making you feel better in dire times. We had way too many fun moments to describe here. These special memories of Matt will live with me but Matt's legacy will live forever. RIP Matt.

Thanks Matt for being an amazing friend, whether poolside or Christmas dinner, you made family out of all your friends and did so much for everyone. All the memories you caught with your selfie stick, will last us a lifetime. We never had a fight or a bad moment, its rare to have nothing but great memories with another human and I really thank you for that. It makes you in my top ten, I always was learning something new from you and your dedication to your career was admirable. Until we met again, may your rest in peace. I love you and will miss you.

From the time Jill introduced me to you, we weren’t even sure if you preferred Rob or Matt, so you forever became RobMatt. You showed me a world outside of my small town and introduced me to amazing friends who became family. You lit up every room, put a smile on any sad face, and were always there. Even though time and location created distance, you would still text here and there just to check in. You are a beautiful soul. I hope you are rocking the heavens and adding a little extra light up there. You will forever be missed by so many, RobMatt. <3

I see a common statement from those who have met you, Matt. It’s that you MOLDED their lives. It’s amazing to see how many people you’ve influenced and how much joy you’ve brought. You were always the life of the party, whether it was a small friendly movie night or an enormous circuit party, you took the reins and made sure everyone was included and having fun. I will never forget the amazing times we had. Theme parties after work in Connecticut, Thursday nights at UCONN, spring break in Florida, Lake Compounce at Halloween, exploring San Diego, PRIDE in SF, Christmas back in Connecticut. I love you forever and always. Thank you for being a part of my life.
