native, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2025, in Sarasota, Florida, at the age of 87. The day marked
his 56th wedding anniversary with his devoted wife, Maryann.
Born on February 27, 1938, in Boston, Massachusetts, Bob was a true Bostonian in heart and spirit. He
was preceded in death by his father, Harry Mannis; his mother, Clara Dearborn; his brother, Richard; and
his sister, Carol. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Maryann; his sons, Christopher and
Matthew; his daughter-in-law, Kristi; and his cherished granddaughter, Avery. His family was the joy and
center of his life, and his legacy of kindness, strength, and compassion lives on in them.
Bob grew up in the Old Harbor project of South Boston—an experience that shaped his values of loyalty,
humility, and resilience. He never forgot his roots and remained fiercely proud of where he came from.
His friendships from childhood were lifelong treasures, and even in his final days, he spoke often of his
“pals from Southie.” He is now reunited with many of them—no doubt singing “Southie Is My
Hometown” once again. After graduating from Christopher Columbus High School, Bob joined the
United States Air Force, serving with honor and discipline. Following his service, he earned his degree
from Fitchburg State College and began a career in naval intelligence. He continued his education
through night school while working full-time, eventually earning master’s degrees from both Fitchburg
State and Boston State College.Though he pursued doctoral studies, Bob made the intentional decision
not to complete his thesis—choosing instead to stay in the classroom rather than move into
administration. His true passion was teaching, especially helping children with special needs. He
believed every child deserved to be seen, supported, and understood. His impact as an educator was
profound and lasting. Even through more than a year of being bedridden, Bob never lost his sense of
humor or the unmistakable glint in his eye. His most defining feature was his ever-present smile—
genuine, warm, and unforgettable. Everyone who met Bob remembered that smile; it was his way of
putting people at ease, of showing love, and of simply being Bob.
Bob was a man of many passions—what his family affectionately called his “waves.” He read every
night, loved music (especially Irish and bluegrass, with a deep fondness for Johnny Cash), and had a
lifelong love of sports. He was an avid sailor, tennis player, fly fisherman, racquetball player, and golfer.
Although he spent his retirement years in Sarasota, Florida, Bob never stopped cheering for his
hometown teams—the Boston Celtics, Bruins, Patriots, and most of all, the Boston Red Sox. He
followed them faithfully, with special devotion to his beloved Sox.
